May Augusta-Aiken Audubon Zoom Meeting: The Secretive Swainson’s Warbler
The next Augusta-Aiken Audubon Chapter Meeting will be on Thursday 13 May, at 7:00 PM Eastern. The meeting is open to the public, and will be on Zoom. Our presenter at this event will be Matt Johnson, who will talk about Audubon South Carolina’s Research on the Secretive Swainson’s Warbler.

Swainson’s Warblers are an uncommon songbird of the southeastern United States, a species that many birders are always hoping to see. Given this bird’s secretive behavior, little is known about it’s migratory pathways and wintering habitats. This talk will focus on the research project that Audubon South Carolina will be undertaking this spring at Silver Bluff Audubon Center to map out some of the mystery behind this enigmatic species.
Matt Johnson is the Center Director at the Audubon Center & Sanctuary at the Francis Beidler Forest. A native of South Carolina, Matt grew up in Columbia and attended Clemson University from 2003-2009. He first started working for Audubon South Carolina in 2013 as the Education Manager at Beidler Forest. After spending a few years in a statewide position for Audubon, Matt returned to the swamp at Beidler in 2019 to be the Center Director. Matt particularly enjoys leading programs and conducting bird research, especially Audubon’s work on priority species like Prothonotary Warblers, Painted Buntings and Swainson’s Warblers.
