RULES OF THE ROAD
AAAS 2019 BIRDATHON

Pledges

Pledges may be made at a set amount or on a per species basis, either of which is to be determined by the donor. If the "per species" option is chosen, the donor is free to set an upper limit, i.e., $.50 per species up to $50.00. Other options include a set amount per species, with the donation increasing if a higher goal is reached, i.e., $.25 per bird, increasing to $.50 for every one over 150.

Donations by participants are encouraged, but are not required.

A pledge sheet will be provided to participants. Feel free to hit up anyone and everyone: family, friends, colleagues, people who owe you because you donated to their favorite cause, your stockbroker....

Participants

Anyone may participate, but inexperienced birders may want to hook up with a team consisting of members with more expertise. It can be an excellent way to learn to identify birds.

What to Count and How to Document

The count will be conducted on Wednesday, April 24, and Saturday, April 27, 2019, from midnight to midnight. Counts for each day are unique and cannot be combined. It was decided to make this a two-day event to accommodate birders who will be counting in heavily visited areas, such as the mountains and beaches.

Both seen and heard birds are countable.

Any birds that appear on eBird's rarities list for a particular location in late April should be documented and described in a manner that would be acceptable to eBird. The Birdathon coordinator will determine if a sighting is countable. Photographs are encouraged!

A bird list will be provided, which will include space for location seen/heard. A general location is fine, i.e., Silver Bluff, Aiken State Park, my backyard, etc. eBird lists are encouraged. They can be emailed to Alice Walker at carolinawren211@yahoo.com. If you’re birding more than one location, they may be submitted as one trip list.

Deadlines and Contact People

All species tallies should be submitted by May 6. This short deadline is necessary so we can establish a grand total, and those people who have pledged based on the number of species counted will know how much their donation will be.

Contact Alice Walker at 803-649-5929 or carolinawren211@yahoo.com to receive pledge forms, and bird count lists. Please notify Alice if you plan to participate, and also if you want to join a team.

All donations should be submitted by May 25, 2019, and should be mailed to:

Augusta-Aiken Audubon Society
4542 Silver Bluff Road
Jackson, SC. 29831

Please do not send cash! Checks should be made payable to "Audubon". If a pledge sponsor makes a check payable to you, endorse the back of the check with, "Pay to the order of Audubon." The Augusta-Aiken Audubon Society is a 501(c)3 organization, and all contributions are tax deductible.

DONATION REQUEST

Dear The Augusta-Aiken Audubon Society is a local group of people with an interest in conservation and a shared love of wild birds. In addition to watching and photographing birds, the club has been involved with providing environmental resource materials for children and adults, water quality work on streams and rivers, cleanup days, field trips and more. Your suppor t can ensure that our efforts will continue to make a difference.

Soon, the Augusta-Aiken Audubon Society will be engaging in BIRDATHON 2019 in an effort to raise money for The Silver Bluff Audubon Center and Sanctuary. This is how the BIRDATHON works: I am seeking sponsors who will pledge dollars and cents for each bird species our chapter teams can find during a birdwatching blitz held over a two-day period (each day is a unique count and will not be combined). It’s OK to set an upper limit!. Some folks prefer to contribute a specific dollar amount, which is great too! Either way, when the results are tallied from our days afield, I’ll send to you an account of the days, a list of bird species seen, and a reminder of your pledge amount, which is tax-deductible. Please make your check payable to “Audubon," and return it to me, along with the attached pledge form or if you're donating on a "per bird species" basis, fill in the amount you wish to pledge, and I will let you know the final tally after the event.

This year’s BIRDATHON is scheduled for April 24 and 27, when our teams will wade through thicket and swamp, searching high and low, to locate as many bird species as possible. We're hoping to see or hear between 180 and 200 species in South Carolina and Georgia in one day! We decided to make it a two-day event to accommodate those birders counting in heavily-visited areas, such as the mountains and beaches.

So, how about making a pledge? The money we raise through the Augusta-Aiken Audubon Birdathon goes to the Silver Bluff Audubon Center & Sanctuary—a local education center, wildlife sanctuary, and favorite birding destination.

I look forward to a pledge from you. Proper care of our environment is everyone’s concern. I hope you can help us protect it. Thanks!

Sincerely
